Irene M. Villaseñor has completed her PhD in Chemistry and MS in Bioethics at the University of the Philippines. She is a Professor at the Institute of Chemistry and Head of the Natural Products Research Laboratory. She is currently the Program Leader of a multi-disciplinary, multi-institution program on the Discovery and Development of Health Products (DDHP), which pursues parallel efforts in drug discovery, i.e., isolation and identification of novel, high value compounds as well as herbal formulations of therapeutic value. DDHP is funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Philippines. She has published more than 50 papers in peer-reviewed journals. Research Interest Her research is on the isolation and structure identification of bioactive compounds from Philippine medicinal plants. These bioactive compounds may be derivatized to drug candidates with drug-like features or the source plants may be formulated into standardized herbal drugs using the bioactive compounds as chemical markers
